Mid-air collision between two Qatar Airways planes were avoided by TCAS alert over South Indian city of Chennai on 17 February 2018.
A Qatar Airways Airbus A330-200,(Reg.A7-ACK) flight QR-825 from Krabi (Thailand) to Doha (Qatar), was enroute at FL380 about 75nm northeast of Chennai (India).
Another Qatar Airways Boeing 787-800, (Reg A7-BDA) flight QR-956 from Doha (Qatar) to Jakarta (Indonesia), was enroute at FL370 on the same airway in opposite direction about 70nm northeast of Chennai when the crew requested to climb to FL390 and were cleared to climb to FL390.
As a result both aircraft were flying in a separation between FL380 and FL390. The TCAS resolution advisories from both aircraft were complied and QR-956 descend back to FL370, and QR-825 climbed to FL386 before being clear of conflict.
QR-825 returned to FL380 and continued to Doha for a safe landing and QR-956 was cleared to climb to FL390 a second time and continued to land safely in Jakarta.
