On Monday, August 13, 2018, a firefighter from Utah was killed from by a broken tree top, after GSS Boeing 747-400 Supertanker flew too low and dropped thousands of gallons of aerial retardant on the area where he was helping battle California’s largest-ever wildfire.
The aircraft dropped retardant approximately 100 feet above the treetops at the accident site., The force of the retardant drop uprooted an 87-foot tall Douglas Fir with a 15-inch diameter at breast height. It fell on firefighters and caused fatal injuries. The drop also sheared an 89-foot tall, Douglas Fir tree at 29 feet above the base and hit a fire fighter who succumbed to his injuries.
